50 Financial Mistakes and Illusions

*50 Financial Mistakes and Illusions* Hope we wise up from 2018......cause it's never late to start.

1. Just can’t manage to fit our Expenses within our Income. And, even when the income increases, the expenses invariably rise much faster.

2. Generosity is in our blood. We happily pay 30-50% p.a. as interest charges to the Credit Card companies.

3. We respect our culture and old customs. We keep our money in the OUTDATED Bank Fixed Deposits.

4. Another example of respect for our tradition… creating a huge pile of (useless) gold jewellery.

5. Yet another example of holding our customs in high esteem… feeling proud if we can leave behind a "20-25 year old dilapidated property" for our children as a legacy [and not a "20-25 year old equity mutual fund portfolio"].

6. Spent more than half a lakh of rupees on a top-end smartphone — just to show off (even though we will not use even one tenth of its smart features).

7. Replaced the same top-end smartphone in just 6 months? Oops... wasn’t it smart even after paying all that money? (Psst... the new model is no different from the previous one, except for some minor tweaks).

8. Haven’t read the blog post ‘My name is Insurance and I am not an investment’.

9. More than 50-60% of the monthly take-home pay is gobbled up and devoured by various loan EMIs.

10. Hotel and restaurant owners love you. You are found at these places, far more than even their most regular staff members.

11. For you (financial) PLAN is a four-letter insulting and derogatory word.

12. Believing that “budget” is only the Finance Minister’s job, not ours.

13. Believing that “managing inflation” is RBI’s problem, not ours.

14. Financial lethargy... not paying the bills by the due date (often resulting in late fees and penal interest).

15. Financial shortsightedness... thinking only of today or tomorrow; and not the next year or next decade.

16. Still waiting for the so-called BEST DAY to invest in equity mutual funds.

17. Never seen our Credit Report, even though it is now available free of cost... forget about working to improve the Credit Score.

18. The Emergency Fund account shows a Zero Balance.

19. 99% focus on earning money. Mere 1% attention on managing the same.

20. Never heard of (or not knowing the meaning of) "delayed gratification".

wasteful-money-habits
You may be blowing away your money due to carelessness and stupidity.

21. Repeatedly falling below the minimum average monthly balance in one's Savings Account.

22. Making our neighbours jealous with our extravagant lifestyle is our life's primary goal.

23. Replace is our motto. We don’t believe in Repair and Reuse.

24. Blindly and needlessly chasing Maximum Returns from our investments.

25. You ask "what does this investment or financial product offer" instead of "how is this investment or financial product beneficial for me."

26. Investing in the world’s biggest con job — a scheme that has the word “child” in it.

27. Paying Rs.150-200 for a cup of coffee, when the same stuff is available at 1/4th the price.

28. You suffer from ‘investment paralysis’ due to Fear of Loss.

29. Not having a ‘professional’ financial mentor as your friend, philosopher and guide.

30. Blissfully unaware that Gym is an expensive fad. Running, walking, yoga are free and superior alternatives to remain as fit.

31. IRR, YTM, CAGR are bouncers that simply go over your head.

32. You think you can beat Roger Federer.

33. SIP, STP and SWP is all mumbo jumbo for you.

34. Hear the word RISK and your legs go jelly with anxiety.

35. Hear the word TAX and again your legs go jelly with anxiety.

36. Spending Rs.250 on a pizza every week? No issues at all. Buying a Rs.250 book on personal finance even once a year? No, that’s a waste of money.

37. In your opinion Stock Market is a Casino and buying equity shares is gambling.

38. If you think that ups and downs are good only at roller coaster rides; and not at the stock markets.

39. The word Pension is music to your ears.

40. Our portfolio is a carbon copy of Rakesh Jhunjhunwala.

41. The biggest gamble we play with our finances — no mediclaim policy.

42. THICK forms and FINE prints scare you.

43. Not yet realized that SUVs burn more fuel, burn more money, burn more environment (thus creating a hell for our children).

44. Not yet realized that Extended Warranties are almost always a waste of money.

45. You are more brand-conscious than price-conscious.

46. Pay for 400+ cable channels. Watch at most 10-12 of them (many of which are anyway free).

47. BUY TWO GET ONE FREE. One of the best ways to make money... for the mall owners.

48. We shamelessly (and foolishly) seek free financial advice and tips on hot stocks.

49. Buying lavish and luxurious Dream Homes, way bigger than our budgets (that often end up as bad dreams).

50. Our plate is often filled with pizzas, burgers, samosas, chips, colas and such other junk food.

51. We forget that “Trust” is an extremely rare commodity in the financial world.

Forward to  your friends..  very true for all of us....

Distance Between The TV Screen And The Seating

Calculating the exact distance between the screen and the seating is usually tricky because of the less ideal layout of the home theater room. So, instead of calculating the exact distance, it is necessary to measure the maximum and minimum distances. Determining the range of viewing distance will also allow you to arrange multiple rows of seats. Use the following simple formula to calculate the maximum and minimum distance.

Width of your TV or Screen (Not the diagonal length) X 2 = minimum distance

Width of your TV or Screen (Not the diagonal length) X 5 = maximum distance

So, if the width of your TV is 55 inches, the minimum viewing distance should be 110 inches or around 9 feet, while the maximum distance should be 275 inches or no more than 23 feet. In short, the first row of recliners should be placed at least 9 feet away from the screen. The last row should be no further than 23 feet from the screen. However, this formula will provide you with a rough idea of the distances. You can try this calculator for exact calculations.

How well you are doing?

'Do you practice?'
'Have you stopped seeing patients?'
'Ohh, you work only in clinic, not in hospital?'
' All the time you are seen at some places'
'Look at xyz, how big hospital he /she built. What are you doing?'
Look at abc. How famous doctor he is. Why don't you become like him?

My humble response to my wellwishers who pose these questions to me:

Life is like a Car 🚗 ! Our life has 4 tyres!

🌸Personal life
🌸Family life
🌸Social life
🌸Professional life

Offcouse, each of these tyres (dimensions) have further ramifications.eg.

(a) Personal life includes hobbies, sports(playing or watching),watching movies, shopping, exercise, yoga, adventures, spiritualilty and so on.

(b) Family life is spending quality time with family members.

(c) Social life is spending time with people other than blood relatives like colleagues, friends etc.

(d)The last one is Professional life. I will elaborate it further. The earlier one's I will elaborate in a later post.

The professional life has various facets. As a doctor, I can tell the facets for medical professionals. It includes the clinical practice, reading medical literature, attending conferences, bedside teaching, giving presentations, health education and awareness, publications, earning money!

Coming back to my experience. I have practiced almost in all strata of medical care. From a remote village in India to a teaching hospital and further to a top class corporate hospital.
The interesing part I found about the medical profession is, it's difficult to have the luxury of spending quality time on each facet of the professional life only (leave apart the other dimensions of life like personal, family, social life). If you concentrate in one aspect, the another one is ignored. I feel that's the reason of frustration among doctors and the cause of burnout. It's an impossible task to fulfill all that you want from your profession, while maintaining a balance of other 3 aspects.

As your clinical practice increases personal, family and  social life starts suffering. Because of your continuous focus only on professional life, sometimes a situation comes where you suffer from a crisis in other aspect of life e.g. Health, family life etc.

There comes a point where you have to really sit down and decide what do I want in life?
My answer to what I want in life is 'baseline peace' if not 'ecstacy'.

What suits best for your seniors, colleagues, juniors might not suit well for you. Everyone is on their own journey. We need to find a right balance which suits  best for your health, family etc. It's a very subjective situation. I believe everyone is unique in the world in terms of attitude and capacity. We have to tailorise our life as per our own subjective strengths and requirements. Hence, the professional life is only one of the dimension of life. Its not 'the only' dimension of life. Its very important to maintain a balance of each dimension. Having said that, its very difficult for each medical professional to maintain balance and give justice to each dimension.

Hence my answers to the questions posed to me during my journey are as follows -

'Do you practice?'

No, I don't practice. I play the game of life (the larger phenomenon) than clinical practice.

'Have you stopped seeing patients?'

No, I haven't. I treat them with more passion and energy. I give them more time as my other dimensions of life are take care of.

'Ohh, you work only in clinic, not in hospital?

I do what suits best for my health and family. You are doing what suits best for you!

All the time you are seen at some non-medical places?

a) Life is a bloody brief happening. Make the most of it.
b) It will be boring to post pictures of me being at workplace at all the other times between these visits to different places.
c) I like to see different places. It's my hobby.

Look at xyz, how big hospital he /she built. What are you doing?

a) xyz is born with resources like capacity, attitude, financial backing, manpower. He/She has ability to deal with pressure. He/She has good administrative skills. I don't have any one of them.

b) I want to do better as an individual, as a family person, as a social person ! Becoming a good doctor is a part of the whole process and not the only goal of life.
It reminds me of one sentence which my DNB teacher Amritkar sir taught me. 'First try to become a good human being, you will naturally become a good doctor. I am still trying the first part of the sentence.

Look at abc. How famous doctor he is. Why don't you become like him?
He or she has that much talent, physical and mental health. I don't have it in that capacity. This comparison of one life with another life reminds me of a quote by Albert Einstein
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

The decisions taken in life are never right or wrong, you have to turn your subjective decisions right!

How to live?

Distribute your day into 8+8+8 hrs to make a good balance sheet of your life.
8 hrs of honest hard work,
8 hrs of good sleep and
8 hrs should be spent on (3Fs, 3Hs and 3S).
3Fs are family, friends and faith.
3Hs are health, hygiene and hobby and
3S are soul, service and smile.
This can make a great balance sheet of your life.
